about helplessness

it is easy for us to look away. it is easy for us to justify anything. as long as it does not affect us.

the killing of men women and children is well justified by the need for industrialisation in the state. human beings can be brutalised as they stand in the way of developement. fertile agricultural land can be sacrificed as the need for industrialisation is higher.

my state west bengal is burning today. the ghosts of the massacre are roaming around in the air of nandigram tonight trying to figure out what happened to them and why. the people in the state are disturbed and horrified by what has happened. some sections of people that is. there is also a section which stands vindicated. and some who have the sympathies for the dead but believe that the same is justified for the greater good.

most of my countrymen outside have the sniggers for the whole incident as another drop in the ocean and they come around to shake their head in disbelief as to how stupid people of bengal are to generally thrust their deaths in the face of developement and thus hamper the juggernaut of industrialisation which is absent from the state.

vietnam.... some photographer was there thankfully.. what about nandi gram? who recorded the horror their? hope god was there....

in a single country there is so much distance between ourselves. so much apathy. we are used to looking away. our family and kin are safe and that is what matters in the end of the day.... and whatever sense of guilt or anger or grief or disappointment at our impotence could manage to creep in is set aside by the strong hands of anger towards the ghosts of the dead souls who obscenely thrust their deaths on our faces. how dare they?those ignorant fools! how dare they not know the value of developement. idiots! the only contribution that they have made to this world is growing crops in a land that should be conserved as the world heritage site for farming given the fact that a land so fertile is seldom seen these days! the idiots only grew the crops which we feed on every day. what the hell do they know about developments and their benefits?

it does not matter that we know nothing of what the world is going to come to in a few years from now when there will be no land for farming and no air to breathe. our development cycle will be complete that day. we will join the ghosts of nandigram that day and will wonder why we had to die. who will be the idiot that day?

but for now, my family is safe. they pay regular money to the local CPM. the party is not angry on them. else they also would have been ghosts.

so for now i can loom away and be happy. its the stupid head which cannot seem to leave the ghosts of those murdered children of nandigram....
